Heathers: The Musical is a rock musical with music, lyrics, and a book by Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy, based on the 1989 film of the same name. The show tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a senior at the fictional Westerburg High School in Ohio, who gets mixed up with a group of rich and popular students nicknamed the Heathers.

The Plot

“Heathers The Musical” is based on the classic 1989 film. The musical tells the story of Veronica Sawyer, a high school student who falls in with a group of rich and popular students, known as the “Heathers”. When Veronica falls for new student Jason Dean (J.D.), she quickly realizes that he is not who he seems to be. J.D. is a rebel who has a dark side, and together, they plot to kill the Heathers. But when their plan goes horribly wrong, Veronica must face the consequences of her actions.

The Characters

The Characters:
Heather Chandler: The “leader” of the clique of three rich girls who are the bullies at Westerburg High School. She is a bigoted, cruel, racist, homophobic, and sexist teenager who takes delight in humiliating and mistreating others.
Heather Duke: The second-in-command of the clique. She is just as cruel and bullying as Chandler, but is not as confident, and is often overshadowed by Chandler’s more forceful personality.
Heather McNamara: The meekest and most sensitive of the Heathers. She is often used by her friends to do their bidding, but secretly feels left out and unloved.
Veronica Sawyer: A fairly popular girl who runs with the Heathers, but does not share their values. She is tired of their bullying ways, but feels trapped by her need to be popular.
J.D.: A brooding outsider who doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. He is intrigued by Veronica’s willingness to stand up to the Heathers, and the two form a friendship that quickly turns into a dangerous obsession.

The Costumes

Rock River Rep’s production of “Heathers The Musical” is full of dynamic characters and even more fascinating costumes. From the edgy, all-black style of Veronica Sawyer to the bright and bubbly looks of the Heathers, every costume helps to tell the story and define each individual character.

Veronica Sawyer is the ultimate outsider. She’s not popular, she’s not a nerd, and she doesn’t really fit in anywhere. Her style reflects her feelings of alienation and isolation. She wears all black, has dark makeup, and her clothes are always solution dyed fabrics – meaning they will never fade away no matter how many times they are washed. This is in stark contrast to the uniforms worn by the Heathers, which are designed to be as bright and eye-catching as possible.

The Heathers are the mean girls of Westerberg High School. They are rich, popular, and they always get what they want. Their costumes reflect their status and power. They wear designer clothes, high heels, perfect makeup, and their hair is always perfectly styled. They are the epitome of what it means to be popular in Westerberg High School.

J.D., Veronica’s love interest, is the classic bad boy. He’s dangerous, he’s misunderstood, and he’s got a rebellious streak a mile wide. His style reflects his bad boy image. He wears all leather, has big chains, and his clothes are always ripped and torn. He’s the perfect example of what it means to be a bad boy in Westerberg High School.
