Formed in 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Metallica is one of the most commercially successful and influential bands in heavy metal history. They have released nine studio albums, three live albums, and numerous singles and video releases. Their debut album, Kill ‘Em All, was released in 1983 and was followed by Ride the Lightning in 1984. These two albums are considered to be classics of the thrash metal genre. 1986’s Master of Puppets is also highly regarded as a thrash metal milestone.

Slayer

Slayer is an American metal band from Huntington Park, California. The band was formed in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman, drummer Dave Lombardo, and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya. Slayer’s fast and aggressive musical style made them one of the founding “big four” bands of thrash metal, alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax. Slayer’s current lineup comprises King, Araya, drummer Paul Bostaph and guitarist Gary Holt. Hanneman and Lombardo left the band in 2013; Bostaph was replaced by Jon Dette in 1996, but rejoined Slayer in 2013. Holt joined the band in 2011 as a touring musician following Hanneman’s death and was formally announced as his replacement in 2013.

Slayer has released twelve studio albums, two live albums, a compilation album and an EP. The band has received five Grammy nominations, winning one in 2007 for the song “Eyes of the Insane” and one in 2008 for “War Ensemble”. Slayer has also played at several music festivals worldwide, including Unholy Alliance Tour (with Metallica), Download Festival (headlining), Ozzfest (headlining), Soundwave Festival (headlining) and Lollapalooza (headlining).

Megadeth is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California. The group was formed in 1983 by guitarist Dave Mustaine and bassist David Ellefson, shortly after Mustaine’s dismissal from Metallica. Along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer, Megadeth is one of the “big four” thrash metal bands of the 1980s. Megadeth has released fifteen studio albums, three live albums, five compilation albums, thirty-six singles, ten video albums, and forty music videos. The band has won multiple Grammy Awards and earned platinum certification in the United States for its 1992 album Countdown to Extinction. As of November 2016 Megadeth has sold over 38 million records worldwide.

“Reign in Blood”

Reign in Blood is the third studio album by American thrash metal band Slayer, released on October 7, 1986 by Def Jam Recordings. The album was the band’s first collaboration with record producer Rick Rubin, whose production changed the sound of the band’s music. Reign in Blood helped codify the musical style known as thrash metal, and it had a major influence on future metal acts. It was named the greatest heavy metal album of all time by Kerrang! in 2004, and was ranked second in Loudwire’s “Best Metal Albums of All Time” list in 2012.

“Master of Puppets”

“Master of Puppets” is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica, released on March 3, 1986 by Elektra Records. The album was the band’s first to be produced by external producer Flemming Rasmussen. It was also the first Metallica album to feature bassist Jason Newsted after the death of previous bassist Cliff Burton.

The album achieved commercial success, peaking at number 29 on the Billboard 200 in the US and becoming the first thrash metal album to be certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). It was eventually certified six-times platinum in 2003 by the RIAA. “Master of Puppets” was critically acclaimed upon its release and has since been included in several publications’ best album lists.
