Where did heavy metal come from?

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1968, three British bands—Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple—released debut albums that hit the charts hard and opened doors for other British metal bands. The same year saw the founding of the record label Bronze Records by Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull; it would go on to release music by suchmetal legends as Motörhead and Venom. In America, meanwhile, groups such as Blue Cheer and Iron Butterfly were playing heavy music that would pave the way for future American metal scenes.

In 1970, four Englishman founded Black Sabbath, which many consider to be the first heavy metal band. From there, other bands followed suit, including Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. In the mid-1970s Judas Priest became one of the most influential bands in heavy metal with their album Sad Wings of Destiny. Then in 1976 an American band called Metallica formed. They would go on to be one of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands of all time.

The 1980s saw an explosion of different subgenres of heavy metal mixed with pop music sensibilities giving rise to hair metal and glam metal bands like Mötley Crüe, Poison, and Whitesnake. In the late 1980s and early 1990s grunge music came out of Seattle washing away much of the excesses of hair metal. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains popularized a new darker sound which led to a second wave of heavier American bands such as Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, and Jane’s Addiction.

In Europe during this time different styles were developing including power metal from Germany with bands like Helloween as well as gothic metal from Sweden with groups such as In Flames and Dark Tranquillity blending death metal brutality with mellower sounds.

The 21st century has seen a continued diversification of heavy metal with new styles such as symphonicmetal developing while older styles such as black metal have gained wider popularity.
