Introduction

Heavy metal music is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1970, Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album marked the beginning of the heavy metal era. During the mid-1970s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein, before achieving commercial success with 1982’s The Number of the Beast. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal had been adopted by many hard rock and punk rock bands. During the 1980s, glam metal became popular with groups such as Mötley Crüe and Poison; their popularity was increased by MTV’s program Headbangers Ball. Glam metal lost mainstream popularity in the early 1990s as grunge acts such as Alice in Chains and Nirvana rose to prominence; however, many glam metal bands survived through cult status.

Finland has a surprisingly large number of heavy metal festivals for its size, with many of them being held in Tampere. Below is a list of some notable festivals:

-Tampere Metal Meeting
-Nummirock Metal Festival
– Jalometalli Metal Music Festival
– Turku Metal Expo
