The Fillmore is a music venue in San Francisco, California, made famous by rock promoter Bill Graham. He opened the 2,200-seat Fillmore Auditorium on Saturday, January 13, 1966. Located at 1805 Geary Boulevard near the corner of Fillmore Street in the Western Addition neighborhood, across from the Lincoln Highway/US Route 40 freeway (now Hwy 101), it became known as “The Fillmore”. It was named after its previous location at the corner of Fillmore and Geary streets.
The building which housed The Fillmore was originally a Victorian-era ballroom which had been purchased in the fall of 1964 by husband and wife team Shelley Mayer and Stanley Schneider for $400,000. When Graham took over the venue he called it “The Carousel Ballroom”, after its original owner’s attraction that had been located there.
In December 1965, he opened a second music venue called The Matrix on Felton Street off Franklin Street in San Francisco’s North Beach section.”
