Music for the Piano

Pianists often have a repertoire of favorite works that they return to again and again. But sometimes it’s nice to mix things up and try something new. If you’re looking for some fresh material to add to your collection, check out our list of 10 recent piano releases that are sure to please.

1. “Inner Worlds” by Michael Finnissy
Finnissy is a British composer known for his avant-garde style. “Inner Worlds” is a set of four pieces inspired by ancient Chinese texts. The first movement, “The Yellow Emperor,” is particularly striking, with its use of quarter tones and unorthodox harmonies.

2. “Rite of Passage” by Thomas Adès
Adès is one of the most promising young composers working today. “Rite of Passage” was written for pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and is a tour de force of technical virtuosity. The piece explores the entire range of the keyboard, and requires the pianist to use extended techniques such as clusters and glissandi.

3. “Artifacts” by Frederic Rzewski
Rzewski is an American composer known for his political works such as “The People United Will Never Be Defeated.” “Artifacts” is a more personal work, consisting of six short pieces based on objects from Rzewski’s childhood home. The final piece, “Noodle,” is a delightful bit of nonsense that will put a smile on your face.

4. “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Andre Previn
Previn’s operatic adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ classic play was first performed in 2005, but only now are we getting a chance to hear it on CD. This recording features soprano Renée Fleming in the role of Blanche DuBois, with Previn conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. While the opera itself may be uneven, Fleming’s performance is simply stunning, and well worth hearing.

5.”The Books of Sharon” by John Cage
Cage was one of the most innovative and influential composers of the 20th century. His late work “The Books of Sharon” consists of two parts: one for piano, played here by Marc-André Hamelin; and one for voice, sung by soprano Dawn Upshaw. The result is a beautiful and moving work that demonstrates Cage’s continued relevance as a composer today.
