Best of Ghazals

Ghazals are a specific form of Urdu poetry, traditionally containing rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing the same meter. A ghazal may be understood as an expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. The word “ghazal” is derived from the Arabic ghuzzle, meaning “to chatter pleasantly.”

Ghazals often have 5 to 15 couplets that share a rhyme and a refrain. The first couplet is independent from the rest; each subsequent couplet shares its rhyme scheme with the other couplets in the ghazal, as well as its meter (usually based on multiples of 2, 3, or 4 beats). The refrain, which appears at the end of the second and fourth lines of each stanza, consists of two parts: a repeated word or phrase (the radif), and a phrase (the qafia) that follows it.
