The Wax House

The Wax House is a musical composition by American composer John Cage, written in 1943. The piece is scored for two pianos, two percussionists, and two actors. It is approximately one hour in duration and is divided into five sections.

The first section, titled “The House of Wax”, lasts for approximately 20 minutes and features the two pianos playing a series of repeated chords in a slow, meditative rhythm. The second section, titled “The Room of Mirrors”, lasts for approximately 10 minutes and features the actors speaking a series of nonsensical phrases. The third section, titled “The Hall of Statues”, lasts for approximately 15 minutes and features the percussionists playing a series of solos on a variety of instruments. The fourth section, titled “The Furnace”, lasts for approximately 5 minutes and features the pianos playing a series of fast, chaotic rhythms. The fifth and final section, titled “The Inferno”, lasts for approximately 15 minutes and features the entire ensemble playing a series of loud, forceful chords.
