The Butler School of Music Opera Division has been around since the 1920s. The division was originally part of the New York City Opera Company and later became its own independent company. The company has produced many successful operas, including “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Carmen.”

The Division was created in response to the need for more trained opera singers in the United States.

Students have performed with the Austin Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, San Antonio Opera, Dallas Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, Savannah Voice Festival, and many others. The Division also offers an annual performances of student-produced opera scenes.

The Division has produced many notable alumni, including Renee Fleming, James Levine, and Placido Domingo.
