Introduction

Indian pop music (Hindi: हिन्दुस्तानी पॉप संगीत; Urdu: ہندوستانی پاپ) refers to pop music produced in India. Indian pop is based on the fusion of traditional Indian music with Western influences, especially English and American popular music. It started with the playback singing tradition of the Hindi film industry.

Indian pop music has been influential in shaping the careers of many Indian playback singers such as Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Amitabh Bachchan and more recently Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam and Arijit Singh.

What is Indian Pop Music?

Popular music in India includes filmi, or Indian cinema songs. Indian pop is a relatively recent genre and had its beginnings in the late 1970s with the emergence of rock and roll and disco music from West. India has been successful in producing its own kind of popular music, which is mixture of Western and traditional Indian sounds, instruments and lyrics. Popular music in India is sometimes referred to as “Indipop”.

Indipop was first introduced in India by organizations such as The Gramophone Company of India (HMV), The Columbia Graphophone Company and several others who brought Western artistes to India and recorded local artistes singing covers of popular English songs. These companies launched the careers of many artists including Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar who went on to become some of the most celebrated singers in Hindi cinema. In contrast to Bollywood filmi songs which are often solely created for cinematic release, Indipop represents a more independent genre of music that is not necessarily tied to any specific industry or film.

The term “Indipop” was first used in the mid-1990s to describe non-filmi music that was becoming popular in India. The musical style is a blend of traditional Indian melodies with modern pop, rock or hip-hop rhythms. It sometimes includes elements of electronic dance music (EDM). The lyrics are usually in Hindi, although English is also sometimes used, particularly in Indi-pop songs aimed at a global audience.

One of the earliest exponents of Indipop was the singer Daler Mehndi whose album Bolo Tara Rara was released in 1995. Other notable early singers include Alisha Chinai, Baba Sehgal and Sneha Pant. The Indigo Music label was launched in 2000 as a platform for indie artistes to release their music. Artistes signed to Indigo have included Euphoria, Raghu Dixit, Mohit Chauhan, Mohan Kanan and Shruti Pathak among others. Sony Music launched their Desi Music label in 2005 with artists such as Kailash Kher, Vijay Prakash and Jassi Sidhu. TSeries has also had success with their Pop Albums series which has featured acts such as Anaida, Meenal Jain and Viva..

In recent years there has been a renewed interest in Indipop with a number of new artistes emerging on the scene. These include Bombay Bassment, Dualist Inquiry, Sic & Madboy/Mink (who recently won Best Inde Electronic Act at VH1 Soundnation Awards 2016), Skrat, Nucleya and that techno pioneer Midival Punditz among many others

History of Indian Pop Music

It is generally believed that Indian pop music started with filmi songs, which are songs written specifically for Bollywood movies. The first filmi song is thought to be “Awaara Hoon”, which was composed by Shankar Jaikishan and sung by Mukesh for the 1951 film Awaara. The song became very popular, and helped to launch the careers of both Jaikishan and Mukesh. Indian pop music really took off in the 1960s and 1970s, with hits like “Dum Maro Dum” (1970) and “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (1972). In the 1980s and 1990s, Indian pop music became more electronic, with influences from disco, hip hop, and house music. Some of the most popular Indian pop musicians of this era include Alisha Chinai, Kumar Sanu, Baba Sehgal, and Falguni Pathak. In the 2000s, Indian pop music has continued to evolve, incorporating elements from Western pop music as well as traditional Indian classical and folk music. Some of the most popular contemporary Indian pop musicians include Sunidhi Chauhan, Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal, Amit Trivedi, and A.R. Rahman.
