The IU Jacobs School of Music Opera program began in 1920 with a three-week summer program. In 1924, it expanded to six weeks. By 1931, it had become a nine-week summer session, and in 1940 it evolved into a two-semester program. In 1953, the opera program became a full-fledged academic department within the Jacobs School of Music.
