Indie Rock Music Interview: What Makes a Personality in Canada?
In this interview, we speak with an up and coming musician in the Canadian Indie Rock scene about what it takes to make it as a personality in the music industry.

Introduce the band

In this Indie Rock Music Interview, we meet the band, “What Makes a Personality in Canada?”. We discuss their music, inspirations, and their thoughts on the Canadian music scene.

Where is the band from and what is the story behind the name?

The indie rock band Personality is from Canada. The band’s name is a reference to the fact that the members are all from different parts of the country. Personality was formed in 2012 by singer-songwriter Andrew Joyal and guitarist Marc-Olivier Bouchard. The two had met while attending university in Montreal and bonded over their shared love of music. They began playing together in various local bands before decided to form their own group.

The band’s debut album, “Personality”, was released in 2013. The album was a critical success, with many reviewers praising the band’s unique sound.

Personality has since released two more albums, “Groupthink” (2015) and “Northern Lights” (2017). The band is currently working on their fourth album, which is set to be released in 2019.

How would you describe your music?

My music is a mix of different styles. I like to experiment with different genres and try to create my own sound. I would describe it as Indie Rock with a mix of other genres.

Who are some of your musical influences?

Some of our musical influences come from classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, as well as newer bands like Arcade Fire and The National. We’re also inspired by a lot of different types of music from around the world, including traditional folk music, electronic music, and even film soundtracks.

What is your songwriting process like?

As a songwriter, I often feel like I am channeling something that is beyond me. The songs just come to me, and it is my job to capture them and get them down on paper (or in a recording). I don’t really have a process, per se. I just try to be open to the songs when they come, and be ready to write them down quickly before they disappear again.

What are some of the themes you explore in your music?

We explore a lot of themes in our music, but some of the recurring ones are mental health, relationships, and the human condition. We try to approach these topics in an honest and relatable way, and we hope that our music can provide a sense of comfort or understanding for people who are going through tough times.

What is the story behind your latest album?

Thanks for asking! We actually just released a new album a few weeks ago, and it’s been doing really well. It’s called “ Personality in Canada” and it’s all about, well, the different personalities that make up Canada.

We wanted to capture the country’s diversity in both the music and the lyrics, so we worked with a lot of different artists from all across the country. Each song is about a different type of personality, from the “party animal” to the “overachiever” to the “introvert.” We even have a song about Canada’s infamous “nice guy” stereotype.

The album has been really well-received so far, and we’re thrilled that people are enjoying it. Thanks for asking!

What are your plans for the future?

We asked Indie Rock Music what their plans for the future are, and they had this to say:

“We plan on continuing to make music that we love and connecting with our fans. We’ll be touring Canada extensively in support of our new album, and we hope to bring our music to new audiences all over the world.”

How do you feel about the current state of the music industry?

The current state of the music industry is very exciting. There are so many new artists and bands emerging all the time, and it feels like there is a real sense of possibility and creativity in the air. I think the industry is in a really good place right now.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians?

There’s no one answer to this question, as every artist’s journey is unique. However, some important things to keep in mind are to be persistent and patient, and to always focus on honing your craft. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to make it as a musician, but if you have a passion for it, anything is possible.

Another piece of advice would be to try and stand out in some way. With the music industry being so saturated, it’s important to find ways to make yourself stand out from the rest. Whether it’s through your music, your image, or your personality, try and find ways to make yourself different and memorable.

And finally, don’t forget the importance of networking. Getting your name out there is essential for any musician, so attend shows, meet other artists, and make connections whenever you can. The more people you know in the industry, the better your chances of success will be.
