Industrial music is a genre of music that draws on transgressive and provocative themes. The industrial music genre is characterized by a harsh, industrial sound that often incorporates elements of electronic and experimental music. Industrial music first came to prominence in the 1970s with the rise of industrial rock and punk rock bands such as Throbbing Gristle, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division. In the 1980s and 1990s, industrial music evolved into a more commercial form with the rise of industrial metal and electronic body music.

The term “industrial music” was first used in the mid-1970s to describe the output of British producer Tony Wilson’s Factory Records label. Factory Records featured a number of groundbreaking bands such as Joy Division, The Durutti Column, and early incarnations of New Order and The Happy Mondays. In contrast to Wilson’s relatively traditional approach to rock & roll, Factory’s artists experimented with found sounds, tape loops, synthesizers, and other cutting-edge studio technology.

In the 1980s, the industrial music scene was largely overshadowed by the rise of synth-pop and new wave groups such as Depeche Mode, Yazoo, New Order, Erasure, and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). However, there were a number of important industrial bands active during this era, including Front 242, KMFDM, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Revolting Cocks (a side project of members of Ministry and Front 242), Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly ,and Test Department.

The 1990s saw a resurgence of interest in industrial music with the rise of electronic body music (EBM) groups such as Front Line Assembly ,Nitzer Ebb ,KMFDM ,and Laibach ,as well as gothic/industrial bands such as Sisters Of Mercy ,Marilyn Manson ,Rammstein ,and Nine Inch Nails . In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in the heavy sounds of early industrial bands like Throbbing Gristle ,Coil ,and Cabaret Voltaire .
