Kevin McCallister (Culkin) is an 8-year-old boy who is mistakenly left behind when his family flies to Paris for their Christmas vacation. Kevin initially relishes being home alone, but soon has to contend with two burglars (Pesci and Stern). The film was shot in Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.

While the majority of the film’s music was composed by John Williams, its title song (“Somewhere in My Memory”) was written by Leslie Bricusse and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery composer George S. Clinton. The score features several pop songs as well. “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by Brenda Lee was featured in the film’s opening sequence set at McCallister’s house on Christmas Eve as people are decorating their homes and trees for the holiday. Lee’s recording of the song had reached No. 14 on Billboard′s Hot 100 chart in December 1958 and No. 3 on Billboard′s Christmas singles chart that year—the song would peak at No. 2 on Billboard′s Christmas chart in both 1961 and 1962 while “Jingle Bell Rock” featuring Bobby Helms would top the 1962 chart; “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” would return to No. 1 on Billboard’s festive survey in December 1985 following its use during a key scene in Home Alone where McCallister (Culkin) dances around his home with his hands in his pockets.”Christmas Star” by Paul McCartney is also used during this scene as we see McCallister waking up early on Christmas morning to open presents alone before anyone else is awake..
