Learn the song by ear

One of the best ways to learn a new song is by ear. This means listening to the song and trying to figure out how to play it on your instrument. When you’re first starting out, it can be helpful to find a version of the song that is played at a slower tempo. This will give you more time to figure out the notes and the timing. You can also try finding a version of the song that is played in a key that is comfortable for you to play in. Once you have the basic melody down, you can start to add in your own embellishments and style.

“It Is Well With My Soul” is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the best-known composition by Bliss.

The context of the hymn is Spafford’s experience of personal tragedy. In 1873, the financial Panic of 1873 struck America, causing the failure of business firms and banks across the country, including those owned by Spafford. As a result, he lost nearly everything he had invested. Then, in November 1873, while en route to Europe with his wife and four daughters aboard the SS Ville du Havre, the ship collided with another vessel and began to sink rapidly. His wife and daughters all drowned; only their bodies were recovered and returned to him for burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Lakeview Cemetery, Chicago. Grieving horribly over the death of his loved ones, Spafford wrote these words as his theology brought him comfort:

It is well with my soul,
It is well, it is well with my soul.
