Lyrics

It is well with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul.
Though Satan should buffete, though trials should come,
let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate
and hath shed His own blood for my soul.
It is well… It is well… with my soul.

“It Is Well with My Soul” is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (New York:Biglow & Main, 1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring of all the great gospel hymns of the late nineteenth century.

The tune was inspired by Pixley’s “The Christian’s Good Night”, which was written for a different text in 1858. Bliss created his own original melody, which caught on immediately after its publication. The melody has been described as “flowing”, “soothing”, and “sacred”.

The lyrics of the first stanza are based on part of a letter written by Spafford to his wife after the death of their four daughters in a shipwreck. The hymn reflects on Matthew 14:30, in which Peter began to sink into the water when he doubted Jesus’ ability to save him and had to be rescued. It is one of several popular hymns that tell of God’s peace in the midst of suffering.
