Introduction

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, commonly referred to as Jazz Fest, is an annual celebration of the music and culture of New Orleans, Louisiana. The festival is held over seven days in April and features musical performances by local, national, and international artists, as well as food and craft booths, educational exhibits, and more.

Jazz Fest was founded in 1970 by George Wein, producer of the Newport Folk Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival, and New Orleans businessman Aaron Neville. The festival’s original purpose was to celebrate the city’s indigenous music—jazz—which was at risk of being lost to history due to the scarcity of recordings and venues. Since its inception, Jazz Fest has expanded its scope to include all genres of music, food from all corners of the city’s diverse culinary scene, local arts and crafts, and more.

Today, Jazz Fest is one of the most iconic music festivals in the world, attracting over half a million visitors each year. The festival grounds are located in New Orleans’ historic City Park, and feature multiple stages with a wide variety of acts playing throughout the day. In addition to music, visitors can enjoy food from some of New Orleans’ most famous restaurants, browse arts and crafts from local vendors, or take part in interactive educational exhibits.

Jazz Fest is always held on the last full weekend in April (with an additional Friday added for Good Friday). The 2022 festival will take place April 28-30 (with an additional day on May 1 for Good Friday).
