Best Jazz Music Albums of All Time

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation.

The term “jazz” was first used in print by writers such as Bessie Smith and Mezz Mezzrow to describe music being played at local clubs, such as the Spot in Chicago, around 1915. By 1917, Jelly Roll Morton was using the word “jass”, which he said was an old Louisiana Creole word meaning “spicy”, to refer to his new style of music. The first mention of “Jazz” in mainstream print was in an advertisement for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Club in Chicago, appearing on October 20, 1917, which said “Miss Ma Rainey will open her Black Bottom oxygenating Jazz Court … 8851 S State St.” In 1918 Jelly Roll Morton moved to Chicago and recorded a hit song called “Jelly Roll Blues”. Other importantearly recorded jazz artists include Eubie Blake (pianist) and Sidney Bechet (clarinetist).

During the 1920s and 1930s jazz underwent various diversifications providing swing music and bebop. Classic female singers such as Ella Fitzgeraldand Billie Holiday became popular during this time. Louis Armstrong became one of the most influential figures in jazz with his trumpet playing styleand helped to solidify bebop as a recognized style. Swing bands including Duke Ellingtonand Benny Goodmanbecame popular with both black and white audiences during the 1930s.
