Wynton Marsalis
Wynton Learson Marsalis (born October 18, 1961) is an American trumpeter, composer, teacher, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has promoted the appreciation of classical and jazz music often to young audiences. Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards; he also received the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1997 for Blood on the Fields, a three-hour oratorio by Marsalis. In 2008, The Guardian placed Marsalis first in its list of “the 50 best jazz trumpeters of all time”.
Born in New Orleans) Marsalis studied music at The Juilliard School. He played with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before entering the studio as a solo artist in 1982, with his debut album Créole Love Call. His career began to take off most visibly in 1980 when he performed at a White House state dinner for Queen Elizabeth II; this led to several high-profile tours and appearances over the next few years.
Jason Moran
Moran is a jazz pianist, composer, educator, and visual artist from Houston, TX. He has released 11 albums as a bandleader and has worked with a variety of artists in many different genres. Moran won a MacArthur “Genius” grant in 2010 and was named Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year in 2013. He currently serves as the Kennedy Center’s Artistic Director for Jazz.
Brad Mehldau
Pianist and composer Brad Mehldau has been a leader in the jazz world since the early 1990s. A protégé of pianist Chick Corea, Mehldau first came to prominence as a member of saxophonist Joshua Redman’s band before striking out on his own with a series of acclaimed albums. His playing style is marked by a lyrical sensibility, technical mastery, and improvisational flair.
Mehldau was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on August 23, 1970. He began playing piano at an early age and soon developed a love for jazz. After graduating from high school, he attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. It was there that he met Redman, with whom he would later collaborate.
In 1994, Mehldau released his debut album, Introducing Brad Mehldau. The album received critical acclaim, and Mehldau began to establish himself as one of the leading young pianists in jazz. He has since released over a dozen albums as a leader, including the Grammy-nominated Largo (2002) and House on Hill (2006).
In addition to his work as a solo artist, Mehldau has collaborated with some of the biggest names in jazz, including Pat Metheny, Wayne Shorter, and Charlie Haden. He has also ventured outside of the jazz world with forays into pop (with singer-songwriter Fiona Apple) and classical music (with violinist Joshua Bell).
Mehldau continues to be one of the most sought-after musicians in jazz today. He currently leads his own trio and remains an active collaborator with some of the biggest names in music.
