The different Jazz styles include:

-New Orleans jazz: This style developed in the early 1910s and was the first distinctive style of jazz. It was typified by group improvisation, polyphonic ensemble playing, and a regular or idiosyncratic rhythmic “groove”. The first great New Orleans band was that led by Jelly Roll Morton, which came to be known as Morton’s Jass Boys; other important bands were those led by King Oliver, Kid Ory, Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet.

-Swing: Developed in the mid-1930s and dominated jazz until the mid-1940s. Because it was easy to dance to, Swing became enormously popular with both white and black audiences; Swing bands were sometimes called “Big Bands”, due to their often large instrumental lineups. notable exponents of this style were Benny Goodman’s band, Glenn Miller’s band (both featuring mixed ensembles) as well as Artie Shaw’s Gramercy Five (a small group). The Kansas City jazz school also gained prominence during this time period; it spawned such great players as Charlie Parker, Lester Young and Count Basie. Bebop: An abbreviation of “revival bop”. This is an afrocentric style developed in the early 1940s which contributed to the demise of swing; bebop musicians sought to return jazz to its predominantly African American roots by emphasizing complex harmonic structures derived from chord progressions used in blues songs (thus employing blue notes), rather than relying on standard 32 bar AABA pop song chord progressions which had come to dominate much of popular music by that point. The most famous bebop musician is undoubtedly alto saxophonist Charlie Parker; other beboppers included trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Clifford Brownm pianists Bud Powell und Thelonious Monk, drummers Max Roach und Kenny Clarke and tenor saxophonists Dexter Gordon und Sonny Rollins
