About Joe Avery

Joe Avery was born in Louisiana in 1884, and is one of the few musicians who was both a contemporary of and influenced by the great Louis Armstrong. Avery played the piano and sang, and his music was a mix of blues, ragtime, and traditional jazz. His most famous song is “Joe Avery’s Blues,” which was recorded by Armstrong in 1926.

Joe Avery (1897–1950) was an American blues musician. He is best known for his work as a sideman with Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton.

Avery was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began playing the trumpet at an early age, and by his teens he was gigging around New Orleans with some of the city’s most famous musicians, including Armstrong and Morton. He quickly developed a reputation as a talented sideman, and he went on to play with some of the biggest names in blues and jazz, including Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Duke Ellington.
