Judas Priest’s History

Judas Priest is a British heavy metal band that was formed in 1969. The band has released twenty-four studio albums, fourteen live albums, and numerous singles and videos. Judas Priest is considered to be one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time. The band has sold over 50 million albums worldwide.

Formative years

Judas Priest formed in Birmingham, England in 1969. The band’s original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist John Hinch, bassist Ian Hill, drummer Alan Moore, and guitarist/vocalist Ernie Chataway. The band’s early years were spent playing various gigs around Birmingham. In 1970, they released their first single, “Cherry Pie”, which was followed by their self-titled debut album in April 1971.

During the recording of their second album, Sad Wings of Destiny (1976), original singer Chataway left the band and was replaced by Rob Halford. With Halford at the helm, Judas Priest released a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s, including Stained Class (1978), Hell Bent for Leather (1979), British Steel (1980), and Defenders of the Faith (1984). The band’s popularity continued to grow throughout the 1990s with the release of Painkiller (1990) and Jugulator (1997).

Judas Priest is considered to be one of the pioneers of heavy metal music. Their sound has heavily influenced countless other metal bands over the years. The band is also known for their trademark look of leather jackets and studded denim jeans, as well as their onstage pyrotechnics. Judas Priest has sold over 50 million records worldwide and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon!

The ’70s

In 1970, Judas Priest released their debut album, “Rocka Rolla”. The album was not a commercial success, but it did show the band’s potential. The following year, they released their second album, “Sad Wings of Destiny”. This album was much more successful, and helped to establish the band’s reputation as a heavy metal force to be reckoned with.

The band’s third album, “Stained Class”, was released in 1978. This album was even more successful than its predecessor, and cemented Judas Priest’s place as one of the most popular metal bands of the decade. They followed up with the release of “Unleashed in the East” in 1979, a live album that further increased their popularity.

The early ’80s saw Judas Priest continuing to release successful albums and tour extensively. In 1982, they released their fifth album, “Screaming for Vengeance”, which became their most successful album yet. It featured the hit single “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”, which helped to increase the band’s popularity even further. The following year, they released “Defenders of the Faith”, which was another critical and commercial success.

Judas Priest continued to tour and release albums throughout the ’80s and ’90s, cementing their reputation as one of the most successful and popular metal bands of all time. In 2020, they celebrated their 50th anniversary with a world tour.

The ’80s

In the early 1980s, Priest released Point of Entry, which reached No. 4 in the UK and featured the Top 40 hit “Heading Out to the Highway”. The follow-up album, Screaming for Vengeance, was an even greater success, reaching No. 1 in both the UK and US – becoming their most commercially successful album – and was supported by a world tour. It included the US Top 10 single “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin'”, which helped propel Screaming for Vengeance to double platinum status in the US. In 1983, Rob Halford wore a leather bondage outfit onstage at San Francisco’s Kezar Stadium during the Worldmetal Carnage US tour to promote Screaming for Vengeance; this caused quite a stir among moral activists of that time. In addition, he frequently performed stunts onstage including riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and hanging from chains during performances of “Hell Bent for Leather”.

The ’90s and 2000s

The ’90s and 2000s were a tough period for metal bands in general, and Priest was no exception. Record labels were less willing to invest in guitar-based music, and the band was forced to adapt its sound to stay relevant. They experimented with industrial metal on the album “Painkiller” (1990), which was a commercial success, but their follow-up, “Jugulator” (1997) was less well-received. By the early 2000s, the band was in danger of being dropped by their label altogether.

Luckily, they found success once again with the release of “Angel of Retribution” (2005), which marked their return to a more traditional metal sound. They’ve continued to tour and release new music sporadically in the years since, most recently with “Firepower” (2018). While they may not be as popular as they once were, Judas Priest remains an influential and respected name in heavy metal circles.
