Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, better known by his stage name Kenny G, was born on June 5, 1956, in Seattle, Washington. His mother was a Jewish immigrant from Russia who worked as a librarian, and his father was a saxophonist. Kenny G began playing the saxophone at the age of ten and later went on to study with jazz saxophonist Joe Henderson at the University of Washington.

He also loved the playing of Grover Washington Jr., whose work would later inspire some of Kenny G’s own recordings. After graduating from high school, Kenny attended the University of Washington on a scholarship. He played in various jazz ensembles while studying for his degree in accounting.

Kenny G attended the University of Washington in Seattle on a saxophone scholarship. After graduating in 1978, he began his professional career playing with The Jeff Lorber Fusion. He toured with them for a year and then joined Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. Along with his saxophone playing, Kenny G also did some arrangement and composition work for the orchestra. He worked with them until 1983, when he decided to strike out on his own as a solo artist.
