The King of Soul Music was a title given to Otis Redding by fellow musicians and fans alike. He was a master of making emotion-packed music that connected with people on a deep level. His unique voice and style influenced generations of singers and continues to do so today.


The King of Soul Music is a title that has been used to describe many different artists over the years. However, there is only one true King of Soul, and that is the one and only James Brown.

Born in 1933 in Barnwell, South Carolina, James Brown rose to fame in the 1950s with his unique style of rhythm and blues. He went on to have a hugely successful career, releasing over 100 hit singles and becoming one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

Sadly, James Brown passed away in 2006. However, his music continues to live on and he is still considered to be the King of Soul.

The Life and Times of James Brown

James Brown was a man of many talents. Not only was he a gifted singer, songwriter, and dancer, but he was also a self-made man. James Brown was born on May 3, 1933, in Barnwell, South Carolina. He was the fourth of six children born to Joseph and Susie Brown. His father left the family when James was only four years old, and his mother worked hard to support them as a laundress. When he was five years old, his mother married William Hoskins, and James took his last name. Hoskins was a violent man who frequently abused both Susie and her children, leading James to run away from home several times.

Despite the difficulties of his childhood, James Brown developed a strong interest in music at an early age. He loved gospel music and often snuck into the local church to hear the famous gospel singer Mahalia Jackson perform. He also enjoyed listening to Rhythm and Blues on the radio. When he was 10 years old, he received his first musical instrument, a harmonica given to him by one of his brothers. Shortly thereafter, he began learning to play the drums.

James Brown’s First Hits

James Brown’s first big hit on the R&B charts was “Please, Please, Please,” which was released in 1956. It reached number six on the R&B chart. This was followed by “Try Me” in 1958, which reached number one on the R&B chart and number 48 on the pop chart. It sold over a million copies. “Try Me” was followed by a string of other hits including “I Got You (I Feel Good)” in 1965 and “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” in 1966.
