The La Bohème Opera is one of the most popular and well-known operas of all time. It’s coming to Denver this month, and we couldn’t be more excited!

La Bohème Opera

La Bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger. The world premiere performance took place at the Teatro Regio in Turin on 1 February 1896. The opera was also performed in the United States in 1896.

History of the Opera

The opera La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini is set in Paris in the 1830s and is based on the novel by Henri Murger called Scènes de la vie de bohème. The story follows a group of young artists and friends as they live, love, and struggle in the bohemian quarter of the city.

Puccini’s opera was first performed in 1896 and was an instant success. It remains one of the most popular operas today, with over a thousand productions taking place around the world every year.

Denver is fortunate to have its own professional opera company, Opera Colorado, which produces several operas each season. La Bohème will be performed at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House in February 2020. Tickets go on sale December 2019.

The Plot of La Bohème

La Bohème tells the story of a group of young artists struggling to make ends meet in Paris’ Latin Quarter around the year 1830. The central figure is Rodolfo, a poet, who falls in love with Mimì, a seamstress. The other main characters are Marcello, a painter; Colline, a philosopher; Schaunard, a musician; and Musetta, Marcello’s on-again off-again girlfriend.

The first act takes place on Christmas Eve. Rodolfo and Colline are trying to keep warm in their attic apartment by burning Rodolfo’s plays (“Che gelida manina”). Marcello arrives with food and wine (“O soave fanciulla”), but they have no money to pay the landlord. When Mimì comes to ask for a light for her candle (“Mi chiamano Mimi”), Rodolfo is immediately smitten and invites her in. She tells them about her impoverished background (“Sì mi chiamano Mimì”)and they all go out for dinner at Café Momus except for Colline who stays behind to finish writing his philosophical treatise (“Coat Song: Vecchia zimarra senti! ”).

In the second act, which takes place later that night in the Latin Quarter, Musetta arrives with her wealthy older admirer Alcindoro. She sends him off to buy gloves while she flirts with Marcello (“Quando me n’vo soletta ”). The Wagnerian music of Musettas Waltz sung by Musetta and Marcello breaks up Alcindoro’s return (Musetta: “Quando men vo soletta…Donde lieta uscì… Addio dolce svegliare alla mattina! “) . Left alone, the four friends muse on their various loves “O buon Marcello!
