Her personal life

Born in Pereira, Colombia, Kali Uchis moved to the United States when she was 17 years old. Uchis has said that her parents were “very supportive” of her music career. She began singing at the age of four and started writing songs when she was 12. When she was 17, she moved to Northern Virginia to study audio engineering. After a year, she moved to Los Angeles and studied fashion design for six months before dropping out.

Uchis’ musical influences include Venezuelan performer Simón Díaz, Colombian singer Totó la Momposina, and Panamanian singer Rubén Blades. In 2012, Uchis was featured on Tyler, The Creator’s song “She”. In 2013, she released her first EP titled Por Vida. The following year, she collaborated with Snoop Dogg on the song “On My Level” from his album BUSH. In 2015, Uchis released her second EP entitled Loner.Later that year, she was featured on Major Lazer’s single “Lean On”, which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and won a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.
