The Latin Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video is an award presented at the Latin Grammy Awards, a ceremony that recognizes excellence and promotes awareness of cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists in the United States and internationally. The award goes to the artist, director, and producer of the music video.

History of the award

The Latin Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video was first presented at the 1st Annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony, which took place on September 13, 2000. The award was given to Argentine rock band Soda Stereo for “Me Verás Volver Live”. SpaniardAlejandro Sanz was the only artist to be nominated in this category twice, in 2002 and 2003.

The award was not presented at the 2nd Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2001. American singer Jennifer Lopez was the first and only female act to be nominated in this category when she was nominated for her performance as Selena in the eponymous biographical film Selena (1997). At the 3rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards in 2002, Spanish rock band Hombres G became the first group to be nominated for their video “En Directo”. The award was not presented at the 4th Annual Latin Grammy Awards ceremony in 2003.

Americantropical singer Gloria Estefan became the first artist to win this award twice when she won for her “No Llores” music video in 2004 and again for her “Mi Tierra: Cuban Classics” live album recording in 2005.Spanish pop singer David Bisbal won this award twice consecutively between 2006 and 2007 for his videos of “Quien Me Iba a Decir” and “Precious”, respectively. Colombian recording artist Shakira won this award three times between 2009 and 2011, being the only artist to achieve such feat. In 2012, Chilean hip hop group Makiza became the second group after Hombres G to receive a nomination for their concert recording “Makiza en Vivo Desde el Teatro Caupolicán”.

Criteria for the award

The award is given to the music video album, DVD or Blu-Ray of a maximum length of 60 minutes, or as a complete package including liner notes and/or artwork.

Previous Winners

2016: “I Am Not Your Negro”

In 2016, the award was presented to the documentary film I Am Not Your Negro, directed by Raoul Peck. The film is based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House, which tells the story of the lives and assassinations of three of Baldwin’s friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.

2017: “Calle 13: Sin Mapa”

Calle 13: Sin Mapa is a documentary film about the Puerto Rican band Calle 13, directed by the group’s bassist, Eduardo Cabra. The film was released on August 24, 2017, and won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video at the 18th Latin Grammy Awards.

2018 Winner

This year’s Latin Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video goes to Jesse & Joy for their video “3 A.M.” The video, directed by the Mexican duo, was shot in Mexico City and tells the story of a couple who is trying to find their way back to each other.

The video, which was shot in Los Angeles and directed by Jessy Terrero, features Romeo Santos performing live with his band while footage from his time growing up in the Bronx is inter cut.
