The Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album is an award presented at the Latin Grammy Awards, a ceremony that recognizes excellence and promotes awareness of cultural diversity and contributions of Latin recording artists in the United States and internationally. The award is given to urban artists for albums containing at least 51% of new recordings.

History of the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album

The Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album was first presented at the 5th Latin Grammy Awards ceremony, held in 2004. The award is given to urban music albums “containing at least 51% of new recordings”, defined as “recordings released within the eligibility period that have not been entered into this competition previously”. Eligibility period for the award is defined as “the calendar year preceding the year of the ceremony”.

In 2012, the Academy announced that the award would be discontinued due to a decrease in submissions in the category. It was revived again in 2015.

So far, four albums have won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. Reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee’s Barrio Fino (2004) was the first album to win the award. It was followed by Control Machete’s Comprendes Mendes? (2006), Calle 13’s Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo (2008), and Mala Rodríguez’s Malamarismo (2013).
