He not only helped to create the Afro-Cuban sound that would come to dominate Latin music, but also did much to bring Latin music to mainstream audiences in the United States. He was born Ernesto Antonio Puente Jr. on April 20, 1923, in New York City’s Spanish Harlem neighborhood, the son of Puerto Rican immigrants. His father, a singer and amateur percussionist, exposed him to the music of his native island, and by the age of 10 Puente was playing drums in his father’s band. He also took up timbales (a type of hand drum) and studied piano, vibraphone, and xylophone; later he would add trombone and bass to his arsenal of instruments.

In 1955, she moved to Mexico, where she recorded with renowned bandleader Javier Solís; after Solís’ death, she joined Sonora Matancera and began achieving international fame. Between 1960 and 1964, Cruz toured extensively throughout Latin America and Europe with La Sonora; during this period, she also made frequent trips to New York City to perform at the famed Apollo Theater. In 1962, she appeared in her first film, El Chanfle (The Swindle), which featured a soundtrack of her recordings.
