Celia Cruz

Born in Havana, Cuba, Gloria Estefan emigrated to the United States with her family after the Cuban Revolution. Her parents had originally intended to relocate to Miami only temporarily, but they eventually settled permanently in Miami after the Cuban government seized their property. Gloria Estefan began her career as a singer with the Miami Sound Machine, a band founded by her husband Emilio Estefan, Jr., in 1975. The group became one of the most popular Latino bands of the 1980s and enjoyed mainstream success with such hits as “Conga” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”.

In 1989, Gloria Estefan suffered a near-fatal accident when she was injured in a tour bus accident. She made a full recovery and returned to performing soon afterwards.
