What is Latin Pop Music?

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many diverse styles. “Pop” and “rock” were synonymous terms until the late 1960s, when they were increasingly used in opposition from each other. Although much of the music that appears on record charts is seen as pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart music. Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country. Identifying factors include generally short to medium-length songs written in a format bearing simple harmonies sans counterpoint or where counterpoint was created by limited means usually using only major or minor chords; melodic tunes; catchy hooks; simple instrumentation; repetition of simple phrases; and a regular verse–chorus structure.

Latin pop music is a subgenre of pop music that contains influences from Latin American and Caribbean culture. Latin pop covers bilingual Spanish-English songs as well as purely Spanish language songs.
