What is House Music?

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized by DJs who played in clubs and on the radio. House music quickly spread to other cities, including New York and London, and became popular around the world.

Today, house music is still widely popular, and is often played in clubs and on the radio. It has also been influential on other genres of electronic dance music, such as techno and trance.

The History of House Music

House music is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. It was initially popularized by African American and Latino youths who were attending underground warehouse parties held by pioneering DJ/producers such as Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, Marshall Jefferson and Chips Moman. House music typically features a 4/4 time signature, a tempo of 120 to 130 beats per minute, and synthesizer-generated looping percussion patterns overlaid with catchy melodic phrases.

The genre developed out of the post-disco club culture of the early 1980s, when musicians began experimenting with synthesizers and drum machines to create new sounds. By the mid-1980s, house music had become popular in European clubs and was also being played on American radio stations. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, house music became increasingly popular in America, featuring heavily on the MTV channel. By the end of the 1990s, house music had become one of the most popular genres in the world.

Nowadays, house music is still hugely popular both in clubs and on radio stations around the world. It has also been a major influence on other genres of electronic dance music such as techno, trance and drum & bass.

The Different Types of House Music

There are many different types of House music, each with its own sub-genre and specific style. The four main types of House music are:

1) Chicago House: This is the original type of House music, named after the city in which it originated. It is typified by a simple 4/4 beat and often includes drum machines and synthesizers.

2) Deep House: A more soulful and relaxed type of House music, Deep House often features chords and melodies that are meant to evoke emotions.

3) Funky House: A more up-tempo and energetic type of House music, Funky House often features samples from Funk and Disco records.

4) Tech House: A more experimental type of House music that often incorporates elements from other genres, such as Techno, Trance, and Drum & Bass.

The Best House Music Artists

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, a new style of house music emerged from Chicago that was influenced by the EP style of house that had been developed in Detroit.
