Rock

Rock music is a broad genre of popular music that originated as “rock and roll” in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later. It has its roots in 1940s and 1950s rock and roll, a style which drew heavily from the genres of blues, rhythm and blues, and from country music. Rock music also drew attention to artists with a rebellious image, typically associated with a perspective life outside conventional society.

Some of the earliest rock songs include “Rock Around the Clock” by Bill Haley & His Comets (1954), “That’ll Be the Day” by Buddy Holly (1957), and “I Wanna Be Your Man” by The Beatles (1964). These songs were followed by a wave of British Invasion bands, including The Rolling Stones (1964), The Kinks (1964), The Who (1965), and The Animals (1965). In America, surf rock groups such as The Beach Boys (1961) and Jan and Dean (1963) helped to popularize the genre.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, various subgenres of rock emerged. These included psychedelic rock, led by artists such as Jimi Hendrix (1967) and The Grateful Dead (1967); hard rock, which developed out of garage rock with bands such as Cream (1966), Led Zeppelin (1969), Deep Purple (1969), Aerosmith (1973), Kiss (1974), Cheap Trick (1974); progressive rock groups such as Yes (1971) and Pink Floyd(1973); stadium rock acts such as Elton John(1972), David Bowie(1972)and Boston(1976); glam rock performers such as T. Rex(1970), David Bowie(1972)and Alice Cooper(1973); as well as punk rock bands like The Ramones(1976). In the 1980s, hair metal bands such as Bon Jovi(1986)and Guns N’ Roses(1987)dominated the charts, while alternative rock groups such as R.E.M.(1987)and Nirvana(1991)broke into mainstream success. In the 1990s and 2000s, indie rockers like Pavement(1992), Sonic Youth(1992)and Spoon(1996)gained popularity, while nu metal groups such as Linkin Park(2000)and Slipknot(1999)emerged at the turn of the millennium.

During the 1930s and 1940s, two new sounds emerged in country music: the Western swing of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys (and later Asleep at the Wheel) and honky-tonk, a mixture of immigrant calliope polka music from central Europe blended with blues, vocal harmonies, and guitar instrumentation which became increasingly popular through songs such as “The Wild Side of Life” by Hank Thompson.

Hip-Hop

The first Hip-Hop song was said to be “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang in the year 1979. Since then, Hip-Hop has taken many different forms, and has spread all over the world. Below are some of the different genres of Hip-Hop that have emerged over the years.

Old School Hip-Hop: This is the style of Hip-Hop that was popular from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s. It is characterized by its simple rhyming schemes, and its heavy use of African American Vernacular English.

New School Hip-Hop: This is the style of Hip-Hop that emerged in the mid 1980s, and is characterized by its complex rhyming schemes, and its use of samples from other songs.

Conscious Hip-Hop: This is a subgenre of Hip-Hop that focuses on social and political issues. It is often seen as a response to the violence and drug use that was prevalent in mainstream Hip-Hop at the time.

Gangsta Rap: This is a subgenre of Hip-Hop that focuses on the criminal lifestyle. It is often seen as a glorification of gang violence and drug use.

Pop

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular (and can include any style).

Pop Music Defined
So what is pop music? According to the dictionary, pop music is “a type of popular light musical entertainment consisting of moderately Duration important melodies and themes with simple form and harmonies.” In other words, it’s relatively easy to listen to and digest, but also has enough meat on its bones to warrant multiple listens. In terms of specific characteristics, pop songs are usually pretty concise (clocking in at around three minutes), hook-driven, and feature simple melodies that are easy to sing along to. And while instrumentation can vary widely from one pop song to the next, you’re likely to find a healthy dose of guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and/or synth within most examples of the genre.

The Origins of Pop Music
So where did pop music come from? The answer isn’t as simple as you might think. Unlike blues or jazz or even rock ‘n’ roll, there was no single event or artist responsible for ushering in the pop era. Rather, pop music developed gradually out of a number of different genres over the course of several decades.

One could trace the origins of pop back to the early days of Tin Pan Alley in late 19th century America. This was a time when professional songwriters began mass-producing stylish sheet music tunes specifically designed for public consumption. While most of these early Tin Pan Alley tunes wouldn’t be considered pop by today’s standards, they did lay down many of the established conventions associated with commercial vocal music: namely concise song structures built around strong hooks and easy-to-remember melodic patterns.

Tin Pan Alley would eventually give way to Ragtime in the early 20th century before being supplanted by Jazz in the 1920s. It wasn’t until after World War II that Pop finally came into its own as a distinct musical genre. By this point, a number of different styles—including blues, country, gospel, R&B, and rock ‘n’ roll—were beginning to gain mainstream attention throughout America (and beyond). These various genres would go on to provide much of the sonic foundation upon which Pop would ultimately be built.
