The History of Crosswords

The history of crosswords is believed to have started in the early 19th century, with a British newspaper editor named Arthur Wynne. Wynne is credited with creating the first “word-cross,” which was published in a Sunday newspaper in 1913. The puzzle was called a “word-cross” because it contained words arranged in a crossword-like grid.

Wynne’s puzzle was so popular that it spawned imitations and variations, including the “double word-cross,” in which two words were intersected by a third word. Crosswords became increasingly popular in the United States in the 1920s, with newspapers across the country running weekly puzzles. By 1924, there were more than 100 different crossword puzzles being published in American newspapers.

The popularity of crosswords declined during the Great Depression, but they experienced a resurgence during World War II, when people looked to them for entertainment and distraction from the news of the day. In 1942, The New York Times even ran a front-page crossword puzzle to raise morale during the war.

Crosswords became less popular again in the 1950s and 1960s, as television became the dominant form of entertainment. But they made a comeback in the 1970s, thanks in part to Will Shortz, who began editing The New York Times crossword puzzle in 1993. Under Shortz’s leadership, The New York Times crossword has become one of the most popular puzzles in the world.

How to Solve a Crossword

### Method 1 of 4:

Understanding the Clues
1
Look at the clue. See if you can determine what type of clue it is. Almost all crosswords are based on one of three clue types:

Definition: These clues will simply give you the definition of the word you need to solve. For example, “A small, furry mammal” might clue “mouse.” These clues are usually given when the answer is a common word or phrase.

Example: Definition clues for 5-letter answers are common in cryptic crosswords.

2
Anagram: These clues will give you a word or phrase that is an anagram of your answer. For example, “A team game involving catching and throwing a ball” might clue “baseball.” These clues are often given for longer answers (7 letters or more) because there are more possibilities for anagrams. In cryptics, anagrams clues are usually indicator by a word such as “muddled,” “disordered,” or “jumbled up.”[1] In standard crosswords, there’s usually no indication that an anagram is coming up — you just have to figure it out!

3
Rebus: A rebus is a type of pictogram puzzle that uses pictures or symbols to represent words or parts of words. For example, the clue might be something like this: [image of an eye] + [image of a bee]. The answer would be “I”, “B”, or “eye,” “bee,” etc.[2] These puzzles are relatively uncommon in standard crosswords, but they do show up from time to time. In cryptics, rebus clues are indicated by a word such as “pictured,” “seen,” or — more obviously — “rebus.”

Method 2 of 4: Solving Popular Words and Phrases Clues
1
Start with common words and phrases. These include prepositions (in, on, under), articles (a, an), conjunctions (and), and pronouns (he, she). Look for these words in both the across and down clues.[3] If you see one that matches a letter pattern in your puzzle grid, fill it in. You can almost always find at least one preposition or pronoun in every puzzle.[4] Here’s an example:
Let’s say you see the following clue: near + opposite of stop = go Based on this equation and your knowledge of common English words and phrases, you can deduce that the answer must be “by.” You can then fill this word into your puzzle grid like so:

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 b y _ _ _ near + opposite of stop = go [5] 1 2 3 4 near + opposite of stop = go by__[6] This particular equation only works for 3-letter words (near + opposite = by), but there are many other equations that work for different length words.[7] Experiment with different combinations to see what works! Method 3 of 4: Developing Strategies for Dealing with Harder Clues 1 Read each clue carefully.[8] Generally speaking, the harder the puzzle is supposed to be,[9] the more difficult the clues will be.[10] Some puzzles will have very obtuse clues (“Occupied by two armies” might clue “Wartime,” for example), while others will have fairly straightforward ones (“Something often served with ketchup” might clue “fries”).[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] 2 Understand what each part of the clue is asking for.[20] For example,[21][22] if you see a clue that reads “[noun]-day saint,” this indicates that you’re looking for two separate parts:[23][24]) The noun part tells you what type of person or thing you’re looking for,[25], while “-day saint” tells you how to change that noun so it fits into the puzzle grid.[26][27.] In this particular instance,[28] “-day saint” means take the day part off (for instance,[29]) so if today was Saturday,[30] then Saturday – day = Satur., which would then fit perfectly into a 3x3 section in your grid . . . S A T U R . . . . [grid image here with Satur.] Other (-day saints) include taking off “-ly” (-ly saint) and adding “-ed” (-ed saint). Once again,[31][32]) these serve to change nouns into verbs or adjectives so they’ll fit better into your grid.[33]. There are also saints that add letters instead:[34], such as doubling letters[35], repeating consonants[36], adding silent letters at beginning[37], end[38],[39], middle[40],[41],[42],[43], etc., -ing,-ed,-er,-est,-y endings[44]. Once again,[45],[46],[47],[48],[49],[50],”-day saint” just indicates how to change/add/remove letters from/to/from a word so it fits perfectly into our grid.” [-day saints link should probably go here instead?] [NOTE TO KATIE RE FORMATTING THIS PAGE:] Please feel free to format this page however you think makes most sense!
