The History of Pop Music

Pop music is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form in the United States and United Kingdom during the mid-1950s. The terms “popular music” and “pop music” are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many different styles.

Pop music is eclectic, and often borrows elements from other styles such as urban, dance, rock, Latin, and country. A characteristic of most pop music is an aim to appeal to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology. Sub-genres of pop music include power pop, rap rock, soft rock, synth-pop, teen pop, and bubblegum pop.

The popularity of pop music is often affected by politics. For example, following the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, anti-German sentiment resulted in a backlash against German musicians such as Richard Strauss and Johann Strauss II (both of whom were of Austrian origin). In the 1950s, American jazz musicians such as Miles Davis and John Coltrane were increasingly influenced by African American music (particularly blues and rhythm and blues), which had an impact on the development of rock music. Pop music also absorbed influences from others genres such as classical (e.g., The Beatles’ use of Indian instruments on “Norwegian Wood”)

During the 1960s British Invasion, led by The Beatles,[1] many non-British bands began to emulate the British bands’ success.[2] This was particularly true in America where groups such as The Beach Boys,[3] The Beach Boys,[4] Buffalo Springfield,[5] The Byrds,[6] Crosby Stills & Nash,[7] Simon & Garfunkel[8] and crested in popularity.[9][10] At the same time British acts such as The Rolling Stones,[11] The Who,[12] Led Zeppelin[13][14][15][16]) dominated the American charts.[17][18][19][20][21][22][23u][24/soundoutcome][/soundoutcome][/soundoutcome][/soundoutcome][/soundaftermath][/repeatshortintensity From 1966 onwards Psychedelic Rock became popular with bands such as Jefferson Airplane[25], Love[26], Jimi Hendrix Experience[27], Cream[28], Pink Floyd[29], Iron Butterfly[30], Van Morrison’s Them featuring Ronnie Drew on vocals localised releases included Edison Lighthouse’s Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) )tempo 160/meter 4/4 key C/ Ivi Bridge copyright 1970 Peter Shelley , originally released October 1970 reaching No 1 U K Singles Chart December 1970 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVV7CYOGIzU/) Deep Purple[31], Steppenwolf[32].
