Reggae Music

Reggae music is a genre of popular music that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The style developed from earlier forms of Jamaican music, such as ska and rocksteady, and emerged as a distinct style in the early 1970s.

Reggae is characterized by a strong rhythm section featuring drums and bass, played over a repeating two- or four-chord pattern, with guitar or keyboard occasionally playing the chords, and horns playing countermelodies. Melodic phrases are often reused over the course of a song, giving the music a distinctive vocal feel. Reggae is usually sung in Jamaican Patois, an English-based creole language.

Reggae has been influenced by many other genres of music, including blues, funk, soul, and R&B. Reggae lyrics often deal with social issues such as poverty, racism, and violence.

Characteristics

Reggae is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s. The term also denotes the modern popular music of Jamaica and its diaspora. A 1968 single by Toots and the Maytals, “Do the Reggay” was the first popular song to use the word “reggae”, effectively naming the genre and introducing it to a global audience. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that was strongly influenced by traditional mento as well as American jazz and rhythm and blues, especially the New Orleans R&B practiced by Fats Domino and Allen Toussaint.Reggae relates news, social gossip, humor, and politicians’ speeches to the populace (often via boasting or toasting), which helps pass along oral history; it comprises “a fusion of native styles with elements from Rack-4 grooves that became massive because ‘songs were hedonistic anthems’ for people living ‘under iron-fisted colonial rule.'”
