What are the Latin American Music Awards?

The Latin American Music Awards (Latin AMAs) is an annual American music award ceremony that is broadcast live on the television network Telemundo. The awards ceremony features musical performances by Latin American artists in various genres, including pop, rock, ranchera, and reggaeton. This year’s Latin AMAs will be held on October 17, 2019, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

History

The Latin American Music Awards (Latin AMAs) is an annual American music award ceremony that is broadcast live on television by the television network Telemundo. The awards ceremony honors the most popular artists in Latin music based on album sales, radio airplay, and online streaming in the United States.

The inaugural Latin AMAs was held on October 8, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show was hosted by Cuban-American television personality Eva Longoria. Romeo Santos and Maná won four awards each, while Marc Anthony, Jessy J, Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizárraga, and Enrique Iglesias won three awards each.

How the Awards Are Determined

The Latin American Music Awards are selected by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. This is the same group that votes for the Grammy Awards, so you can be sure that the process is taken seriously. Though there are many different award categories, only four awards are given out during the live show: Album of the Year, Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year and Song of the Year.

Voting for all other categories is done by a select group of music professionals. The albums and songs that are nominated must have been released between October 1st and September 30th of the previous year, and they must be performed in either Spanish or Portuguese. The only exception to this rule is in the category of Best Crossover Artist, which goes to a non-Latino artist who has had significant success in the Latin music market.
