SEO Basics

SEO is the practice of optimizing a website to rank higher in search engine results. SEO can be a complex and ever-changing field, but the basics are simple: make sure your site is relevant and easy to find, and you’ll be on your way to attracting more visitors. There are a number of things you can do to improve your site’s SEO, and we’ll cover some of the basics in this article.

Set up GSC and Bing Webmaster tools

Get your site registered with Google Search Console (GSC, formerly known as Google Webmaster tools) and with Microsoft’s Bing Webmaster tools. These are both FREE programs that give you valuable insights into how your website is performing in the search engines.

GSC will show you things like:
-The number of impressions (times your site shows up in the search results) and clicks (people who click through to your site from the search results) for each query,
-The average click-through rate (CTR) for each query,
-Your position in the search results for each query,
-The “search appearance” of your site in the search results (including rich snippets), and
-Any crawl errors that Googlebot encounters when it tries to index your site.

Bing’s webmaster tools will show you similar information for your site’s performance in Bing’s search engine.

Set up Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web analytics service that tracks and reports website traffic. It’s a valuable tool for understanding how visitors find and interact with your site, and it can help you improve your site’s overall performance.

To set up Google Analytics, you’ll need to create a Google Analytics account and add a tracking code to your site. Once you’ve done this, you’ll be able to see detailed reports about your site’s traffic, including information about where visitors come from, what they do on your site, and how long they stay.

Install and configure an SEO plugin (wordpress)

There are many SEO plugins available for WordPress, but we recommend Yoast SEO. Yoast SEO is a popular and comprehensive plugin that helps you optimize your site for both search engines and visitors.

To install Yoast SEO, log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins > Add New. Search for “Yoast SEO” and install the plugin.

Once installed, you’ll need to configure the plugin. Go to SEO > General and enter your site’s name, tagline, and description. You can also specify your preferred SEP (search engine results page) title separator character.

Next, go to SEO > Titles & Metas and configure the settings for each type of page on your site (homepage, posts, pages, categories, tags, etc.). For each page type, you can set a custom title template that includes variables like the page title, site name, and date. You can also set meta descriptions and nofollow/noodp settings here.

Now that you’ve configures the basics, it’s time to start optimizing your content! Yoast SEO will give you real-time feedback as you write posts and pages on things like keyword density, meta descriptions, and title tags. Be sure to listen to its suggestions and make changes accordingly – it takes a little practice but soon you’ll be an SEO pro!

Keyword Research

Identify your competitors

In order to determine who your main competitors are, you’ll need to first identify the other folk music venues in Los Angeles. You can do this by conducting a simple Google search, searching social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, or using a business directory like Yelp. Once you’ve compiled a list of potential competitors, take a closer look at each one to assess their strengths and weaknesses. This will help you determine what aspects of your own business you need to focus on in order to stand out from the competition.

Conduct a keyword gap analysis

Performing a keyword gap analysis can give you insights into which keywords your competitors are targeting that you are not. This can help you to prioritize which keywords to target in order to better compete in your market.

There are a few different ways to conduct a keyword gap analysis. One popular method is to use a tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush. Both of these tools offer features that allow you to compare your site’s keywords with those of your competitors.

Another way to conduct a keyword gap analysis is to simply review your competitor’s websites and social media profiles to see what keywords they are using. You can also look at their advertising to see what keywords they are targeting.

Once you have identified the keywords that your competitors are targeting, you can then prioritize which ones you want to target as well. Be sure to consider the search volume and competition level of each keyword before making your decision.

Find your main ‘money’ keywords

Your main ‘money’ keywords are the ones that are going to bring you the most traffic and therefore the most customers (or whatever your goal is).

To find these, you need to brainstorm a list of potential keywords, then research how many people are actually searching for those keywords using a tool like Google AdWords Keyword Planner or KWFinder.

You want to look for keywords with a high search volume and low competition. The higher the search volume, the more people are searching for that keyword. The lower the competition, the easier it is to rank for that keyword.

Once you’ve found your main ‘money’ keywords, you can start optimizing your website for them. This means adding those keywords to your titles, headings, and throughout your content in a natural way.

Technical SEO

Leverage “Inspect URL” feature in GSC

In order to take advantage of this feature, simply enter your website’s URL into the “Inspect URL” feature within GSC. Once your site has been analyzed, you will be able to see a list of technical SEO issues that may be holding back your website’s performance. By addressing these issues, you can give your website a better chance of ranking well in search engine results pages.

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly

Making sure your website is mobile-friendly is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to technical SEO.

More and more people are using their mobile devices to search the internet, and if your website is not optimized for mobile, you could be missing out on a lot of traffic.

There are a few things you can do to make sure your website is mobile-friendly:
-Make sure your website is responsive, meaning it will adjust to fit any screen size.
-Use larger font sizes so that people can easily read your content on smaller screens.
-Avoid using Flash or other technologies that are not compatible with mobile devices.
-Make sure your website loads quickly on mobile connections.

Check your site’s loading speed

One of the most important factors in SEO is your site’s loading speed. Visitors will not stay on a site that takes too long to load, and search engines know this. In fact, Google has stated that site speed is a ranking factor in their algorithm.

There are a few ways to check your site’s loading speed. One is to use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool, which will give you a score for your mobile and desktop sites. Another way is to use Pingdom’s Website Speed Test, which will give you a detailed breakdown of your site’s loading time.

Once you know how fast (or slow) your site is, you can start making changes to improve its speed. Some common speed optimization techniques include compressing images, minifying CSS and JavaScript files, and caching static content.

On-page and Content

When it comes to SEO, on-page and content are two of the most important ranking factors. This means that if you want your website to rank well, you need to make sure that your on-page and content are optimized. In this article, we’ll take a look at some tips for optimizing your on-page and content for the search engines.

Fix duplicate, missing, and truncated title tags

When we analyzed the folk music venues in Los Angeles, we found that some of them had missing, duplicate, or truncated title tags. To fix this, we recommend that you:

– Go to each page and make sure that the title tag is accurate and descriptive, and that it matches the content on the page.
– If you have multiple pages with the same title tag, change the title tags so they are unique.
– If you have pages with truncated title tags, make sure that the full title tag is included in the meta description.

Find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions

A meta description is a brief description of the content of a web page. It is typically used by search engines to display a summary of the page in their search results.

If you have duplicate or missing meta descriptions on your site, it’s important to fix them as soon as possible. Duplicate meta descriptions can hurt your search engine ranking, and missing meta descriptions can prevent your pages from being indexed at all.

To find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions, follow these steps:

1. Use a tool like Screaming Frog to crawl your website and identify any pages with duplicate or missing meta descriptions.
2. For each page with a duplicate or missing meta description, edit the page in your content management system (CMS) and add a unique, keyword-rich meta description.
3. Save your changes and re-crawl the site to confirm that the issue has been fixed.

Find and fix multiple H1 tags

It’s important to have only one H1 tag on each page of your website, as multiple H1 tags can confuse search engine crawlers. If you’re using a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, make sure that your theme only outputs one H1 tag per page. If you’re coding your own website, be sure to only use one H1 tag in the HTML code for each page.

Off-Page SEO

When people think of SEO, they usually think of on-page SEO, which is optimizing the content on your website to rank higher in the search engines. However, there is more to SEO than just on-page optimization. Off-page SEO is just as important, if not more important. Off-page SEO is optimizing your website to rank higher in the search engines by getting other websites to link to your website.

In order to improve your off-page SEO, you need to understand what your competitors are doing. A great way to do this is to analyze their link profile.

A link profile is a collection of all the links pointing to a website. This includes backlinks, social signals, and more.

By understanding your competitor’s link profile, you can reverse engineer their off-page SEO strategy and find ways to improve upon it.

There are a number of tools that you can use to analyze a link profile, but one of the most popular is ahrefs.com.

Once you have analyzed your competitor’s link profile, you should have a good idea of what strategies they are using to build links. You can then start to implement those same strategies (or similar ones) on your own site.

One way to determine which websites are linking to multiple competing websites is to conduct a link intersect analysis. This can be done using a tool like Majestic or Moz’s Open Site Explorer.

Simply enter the URLs of the websites you’re interested in into the tool and it will show you which websites are linking to all of them. These are likely to be high-authority websites in your industry that would be worth pursuing for links.

One of the most effective ways to improve your website’s SEO is to target your competitor’s broken backlinks.

A backlink is simply a link from one website to another. Backlinks are an important part of SEO because they help search engines understand how well a website is connected to others on the internet.

When a website links to another website, it’s effectively giving that website a vote of confidence. The more votes a website has, the more popular it is, and the more likely it is to rank highly in search engine results pages (SERPs).

However, not all backlinks are created equal. A backlink from a high-quality website carries more weight than a backlink from a low-quality website. Furthermore, a backlink from a competitor’s website can be even more valuable, as it effectively gives your website two votes: one from the referring site and one from the competitor.

To find your competitor’s broken backlinks, you can use a variety of tools, including Ahrefs, Majestic, and Moz. Once you have a list of broken backlinks, you can then contact the websites that are linking to them and ask them to link to your site instead. This is known as “broken link building,” and it can be an effective way to improve your SEO.
