Introduction
The Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater will be presenting an opera performance on May 5, 2019. The opera, Turandot, is a story about a Chinese princess who agrees to marry a prince if he can answer three riddles. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles.
History of the Manhattan School of Music
Founded in 1917, the Manhattan School of Music is one of the world’s leading institutions for music education, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in classical and jazz performance as well as composition and music history. It is located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City.
The school’s founder, Juilliard student William Schuman, intended for it to provide affordable, high-quality training for young musicians from all backgrounds. The school has since educated some of the world’s most celebrated performers, including Leonard Bernstein, Wynton Marsalis, and Renée Fleming.
Today, the Manhattan School of Music continues to provide an excellent education to students from all over the world. It is a vibrant community of musicians and scholars, and its alumni can be found performing on stages and teaching in classrooms all over the globe.
What to expect from an opera performance
Opera is a form of theatre in which music has a leading role and the parts are sung rather than spoken. A drama is usually played out in front of the audience with the orchestra performing in a pit below the stage.
The art form originated in Italy in the 16th century and quickly spread across Europe. Opera soon became one of the most popular forms of entertainment, attracting huge crowds to see their favourite stars perform.
Nowadays, opera is still enjoyed by millions of people around the world and is considered to be one of the great classical music traditions.
If you’re thinking of going to see an opera performance for the first time, here’s what you can expect:
The story is often based on historical events or mythical tales and is sung in a foreign language (most commonly Italian or German). However, many operas now offer English surtitles (translated lyrics) so that you can follow the story.
There are generally three or four acts, each lasting around 45 minutes. The break between each act gives you time to grab a drink or go to the bathroom!
The music is written by a composer and ranges from fast-paced action scenes to slow, emotional ballads. The singers express the emotions of their characters through their singing, with passionate soliloquies often accompanied by dramatic gestures and facial expressions.
The orchestra usually consists of around 40 musicians and provides an important accompaniment to the singing. You may also notice that some instruments are amplified using microphones, particularly in large opera houses.
The Performance
The students of the Manhattan School of Music put on a wonderful opera performance last night. The voices of the students rang through the hall and filled the audience with joy. The passion and emotion in their voices was palpable, and the music was beautifully executed. It was truly a remarkable performance.
The opera being performed
The students of the Manhattan School of Music Opera program will be performing Gioachino Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” (The Barber of Seville) this Spring. The comic opera, which premiered in Rome in 1816, is one of Rossini’s most popular works. The story centers around the characters Figaro, a barber, and Count Almaviva, who is in love with the beautiful Rosina. Though Almaviva is of a higher social class than Rosina, Figaro helps him win her hand by plotting against the Count’s rival for her affections, Doctor Bartolo. “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” is filled with memorable tunes and humorous situations, making it a perfect opera for first-time viewers.

The Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater was founded in 2014 with a mission to provide young artists with the opportunity to develop their operatic skills and talents through comprehensive training and performance programs. The company is led by Artistic Director Alan Duraiski, who is also the Director of Vocal Studies at the Manhattan School of Music.
The company’s inaugural season featured four fully-staged productions: La Bohème, The Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, and Don Giovanni. In addition to these mainstage productions, the company has also presented severalconcerts and recitals featuring selections from operas such as Turandot, Tosca, Aida, La traviata, and Madama Butterfly.
The company’s second season will feature four fully-staged productions: Romeo et Juliette, Così fan tutte, The Barber of Seville, and Boys from Syracuse. We are excited to continue our commitment to presenting high-quality opera performances for audiences in New York City and beyond.
The set
The set is a very important part of any opera performance. It can set the mood and tone for the entire show. For “The Performance”, the set was very minimalistic. It consisted of a few folding chairs and a music stand. This was likely done to keep the focus on the music and the singers, rather than on any flashy set pieces. The simplicity of the set also helped to create an intimate feeling, as if the audience was watching a private rehearsal rather than a public performance.
The costumes
The costumes for the Manhattan School of Music Opera Performance were created by the acclaimed designer, Reza Abedini. Abedini is known for his work on many operas and ballets, including The Magic Flute, Carmen, and The Nutcracker. The costumes for the performance were inspired by the Art Deco period and featured many classical elements. The use of color was designed to compliment the music and add to the overall atmosphere of the production.
