1
Start by sitting in a comfortable position with the guitar placed so that the strings are facing you. You will also want to be sure that the guitar is in the correct position for your height and size. With the right hand, place the thumb on the back of the neck and position the four fingers behind the strings.

2
Now gently place your left hand in the middle of the strings and position exactly behind where the neck joins the body of the guitar. The thumb should be positioned behind the neck as well.

3
Now that you have both hands in position, it is time to start plucking the strings with your right hand. You will want to use your index finger to pluck the string while holding down one of the frets with your left hand. Be sure to pluck only with your index finger and not any other finger. Also, when plucking be sure to use an up-and-down motion and not a side-to-side motion.
