After a three-year break, Franklin returned with 2000’s The Nu Nation Project. The album was another commercial and critical success, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and winning a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. It featured the singles “Lean on Me” and “Declaration (This Is It!)”, which both reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100.

Franklin followed up with 2002’s Hero, which was another commercial success, debuting at number two on the Billboard 200 and selling over two million copies in the United States. It featured the singles “Hero” and “The Storm Is Over Now”, which both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Franklin’s next project was 2005’s Songs for Christmas. The album was a collection of holiday-themed songs recorded by Franklin and various guests such as Mary J. Blige, Destiny’s Child, Marvin Sapp, Usher Raymond IV, Shirley Caesar, Rance Allen Group, James Cleveland, Aretha Franklin, CeCe Winans, Fred Hammond & Radical For Christ Choir among others. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one on both the gospel charts and the Billboard 200.

In 2007 Franklin released his eighth studio album entitled A Mighty Fortress is Our God . . . Now Let Us Sing!, an all-star collection of hymns recorded with various guests such as former First Lady Laura Bush, Dolly Parton , Smokey Robinson , Yolanda Adams , Shirley Caesar , Bishop T . D . Jakes , Dorinda Clark Cole , Tammy Faye Bakker Messner , Richard Smallwood , Kurt Carr & The Kurt Carr Singers among others. The album debuted at number four on both Billboard magazine’s Top Gospel Albums chart as well as its mainstream counterpart breaking into that list at No. 84 , becoming his highest charting effort to date outside of his core R&B market; it has sold over 340 thousand copies in United States alone according to Nielsen Soundscan .
