“Heavy Metal”

Heavy metal is a genre of rock music that originated in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With roots in blues rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion, extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. The genre’s lyrics and performance styles are sometimes associated with aggression and machismo.

In 1968, three years after the genre’s birth, the first heavy metal band was formed: Black Sabbath. Their dark, gloomy sound and lyrics positioned them as the anti-hippie band of their time, earning them a loyal following among working-class youngsters. Sabbath went on to pioneered the doom metal subgenre with their 1970 album _Paranoid_.

In the 1980s, Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by incorporating twin lead guitars, while Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an emphasis on speed. Bands such as Metallica later blended classical influences with thrash metal to create a more complex sound. In the mid-1990s we saw bands like Pantera taking heavy metal in a more extreme direction with their _ Vulgar Display of Power _ album.
