The United States Marine Band

The United States Marine Band is the premier band of the United States Marine Corps. Stationed at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., the Marine Band is known as “The President’s Own” because of its longstanding tradition of performing for the President of the United States and other high-ranking dignitaries.

Established in 1798

The United States Marine Band is the oldest of the musical groups in the United States armed forces. It was established by an act of Congress on July 11, 1798, and its primary purpose is to provide music for the president of the United States. It is based at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C., and it has been led by many noted musicians, including John Philip Sousa and Conductor Laureate Col. Michael J. Colburn. The band has performed at every presidential inauguration since Thomas Jefferson’s in 1801.
