The dictionary definition of pop music at Wiktionary states: “Popular music is a generic term for a wide variety of styles of medically released commercial recordings from countries all over the world”. Many scholars have traced the origins of pop to specific earlier works. Pop music as a genre began in Britain during the mid-1950s; as American rock and roll and new wave became more popular in Britain by 1963 it was used interchangeably with Merseybeat and rock. From there it expanded into other countries including the US where it became known more broadly as rock and roll or simply rock. In Europe it took on various guises including “new wave”, “synth-pop” and/or “dance-pop”.

In Britain from 1955 to 1965 there was a national chart based on record sales (the NME chart), which was compiled by magazine publisher New Musical Express; this chart was restricted to British releases. In February 1964 the British Trade Union Congress requested that record companies stop Work Not Playlists distribution of promotional material to unionised shops such as HMV; EMI refused and within a week unionised shops across Britain had stopped stocking EMI records. This resulted in what has been described as one of the first backlashes against pop music. The following year saw Billboard magazine publish its first Hot 100 chart; this listed America’s most popular songs regardless of genre. In December 1965 Record Mirror published its first Top 60 singles chart which was quickly adopted by many other magazines such as NME (which used Record Mirror’s positions until March 1967); by April 1966 almost every significant British publication including Melody Maker and disc jockeys such as Jimmy Savile were using Record Mirror’s positions rather than their own charts; finally in July 1967 NME replaced its own chart with one compiled by Record Retailer (which until 1980 was known simply as “the chart”). From this point onwards sales-based rather than airplay-based lists dominated both American and British popular song charts – although airplay continued to play an important role for both singles and albums – until 28 August 1988 when Billboards Adult Contemporary Chart began incorporating streaming data; since then radio airplay has been measured on Billboard’s Radio Songs Chart which incorporates streaming alongside terrestrial radio play) .

Rock

Rock is a genre of music that emerged in the 1950s. It is characterized by a strong rhythm, guitars, and sometimes longing lyrics. Rock has many subgenres, including classic rock, metal, and punk rock.

Classical

The Classical period was an era of classical music between roughly 1730 and 1820. The Classical period falls between the Baroque and the Romantic periods. Classical music has a lighter, clearer texture than Baroque music and is less complex. It is mainly homophonic, using a clear melody line over a subordinate chordal accompaniment, but counterpoint was by no means forgotten, especially later in the period.

Classical music was created by well-educated middle-class people for other well-educated people. It wasn’t until the late 18th century that public concerts became an important part of classical music. Prior to that time, most music was performed in private homes for small groups of people.

One of the most important figureheads of the Classical period is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. His works spanned the entire spectrum of emotions from lighthearted and comedic to dark and sombre. Another great name from this time is Ludwig van Beethoven, who pushed the boundaries of what constituted a “symphony”

The instruments used during the Classical period include the piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and horn.

Jazz

Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States. It originated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and developed from roots in blues and ragtime. Jazz is seen by many as “America’s classical music”. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, jazz has become recognized as a major form of musical expression. It then emerged in the form of independent traditional and popular musical styles, all linked by the common bonds of African-American and European-American musical parentage with a performance orientation. Jazz is characterized by swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz has roots in West African cultural and musical expression, and in African-American music traditions including blues and ragtime.

Country

If you’re from the United States, chances are you’ve heard of country music. This genre developed in the early 20th century in the rural parts of the Southern states. It’s known for its simple instruments, three-chord progressions, and lyrical content about everyday life. Some of the most famous country artists are Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Cash.
