It’s that time of year again where we take a look back at the past twelve months and reflect on the best pop hits of the year. This year saw a wide variety of hits, from catchy one-hit wonders to massive hits that dominated the charts for weeks. Let’s take a look at some of the best pop hits of 2013.

“Get Lucky” by Daft Punk

“Get Lucky” is a song by French electronic music duo Daft Punk, featuring vocals by American singer Pharrell Williams and co-written by the duo, Williams, and Nile Rodgers. The song peaked at number one in 35 countries, becoming one of Daft Punk’s most commercially successful songs and Williams’ second song to top the US Billboard Hot 100 chart after 2005’s “Runnin’ (Lose It All)”.

“Get Lucky” won Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2014 Grammy Awards. As of July 2013, it has sold 7.3 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.

“Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke

“Blurred Lines” is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Robin Thicke featuring American rapper T.I. and American singer Pharrell Williams. The song was produced by Daft Punk memberPharrell Williams and co-produced by Allen Ritter and Thicke. It was released on April 8, 2013 as the lead single from Thicke’s album of the same name (2013).

The song’s lyrics and music video have generated controversy with some accusing them of being misogynistic and promoting rape culture; while others defended the song as harmless fun. Nevertheless, “Blurred Lines” peaked at number one in at least 25 countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The single has sold more than 7 million copies in the United States alone.

“Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons

Conclusion

After listening to and analyzing each of the songs on the list, we have come to the following conclusions:

The general consensus is that the music of 2013 was not as good as that of 2012. There were some absolute bangers (e.g. Get Lucky and Blurred Lines), but for the most part, it seems like the quality of pop music has been dipping in recent years.

There were a few artist who consistently released good music throughout the year, such as Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and Taylor Swift. These artists are reliable if you’re looking for a few good songs to add to your playlist.

Pop music in 2013 was marked by a number of trends, such as the ubiquity of EDM (electronic dance music) and trap music. These genres have been growing in popularity for a few years now, and they show no signs of slowing down. Whether you like these genres or not, it’s important to be aware of their influence on pop music as a whole.
