Best Songs of 2014

The year 2014 was an excellent year for music. A lot of great songs were released, and it was difficult to narrow it down to just a few. However, we’ve managed to do it. Here are our picks for the best songs of 2014.

Song 1

“Happy” is a song performed by American singer and producer Pharrell Williams, from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack album. It also served as the lead single from Williams’ second studio album, Girl (2014). The song peaked at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Williams’ first US number-one single as a lead artist. It also topped the charts in 20 other countries, including Canada, Germany, Ireland and New Zealand. By the end of 2013, “Happy” had become one of the best-selling songs of all time. A live performance of the song on The Voice with backing vocals by Incidentals was nominated for an Emmy Award.

The song was nominated for Grammy Awards in two categories: Record of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. It won both. Additionally, “Happy” was nominated for and won four BET Awards in 2014: Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Viewers’ Choice Award, Coca-Cola Viewers’ Choice Award and Best Collaboration. “Happy” also won Best Original Song at the Satellite Awards and Best Song at both the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards and GQ Men of the Year Awards.”

Song 2

“Song 2” is a song by English rock band Blur, the second single from their eponymous fifth studio album. The song reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart in February 1997.

Formed in London in 1988, Blur’s debut album Leisure (1991) incorporated the sounds of Madchester and shoegazing. Following a stylistic change influenced by American indie rock bands such as Pavement, the band’s popularity increased with the release of Modern Life Is Rubbish (1993), Parklife (1994) and The Great Escape (1995). As a result, Blur became one of the leading bands of the Britpop movement. “Song 2” is credited with helping to popularise the Britpop genre and thrust Blur into mainstream popularity in the United States.

The song was included on multiple Year-End and Decade-End lists. In 1998, “Song 2” was nominated for Best British Single at the Brit Awards. In 2007, it was ranked at number 224 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time”.
