Her father, a singer and guitar player, introduced her to the blues, while her mother played gospel and soul music around the house. As a child, she sang in the choir at her church and began taking piano lessons.
At the age of 18, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a professional musician. There she met producer/songwriter Babyface, who would become her mentor and collaborator. Through Babyface, she was introduced to a wider world of music and began working with some of the biggest names in the business, including Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, and Aretha Franklin.
