Introduction

In 2012, Complex magazine compiled a list of the top 100 hip-hop songs of all timeā€”an exhaustive and insanely debatable topic, to be sure. We decided to take a look at the history of the genre and compiled our own list of the greatest hip-hop songs of all time.

We looked at the songs that defined each stage in the development of hip-hop, from earliest to most recent. We also took into consideration influential tracks that may not have been mainstream hits but had an impact on subsequent artists or entire genres. As a result, our list includes songs from pioneers like DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, and Grandmaster Flash as well as modern rappers like Kendrick Lamar, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, and Jay-Z. If you’re looking for the greatest hip-hop songs of all time, you’ve come to the right place.
