The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group, whose best-known line-up comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, are regarded as the most influential band of all time. With a sound rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, they later utilised several genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. In 1963, their enormous popularity first emerged as “Beatlemania”; as the group’s music grew in sophistication following their initial blast of side-to-side motion songs, led by primary songwriters Lennon and McCartney, they came to be perceived as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era’s sociocultural revolutions.

The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London, England, in 1962. The first stable line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar), Ian Stewart (keyboards), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar, vocals), Bill Wyman (bass) and Charlie Watts (drums). The band’s primary songwriters, Jagger and Richards, assumed leadership after Andrew Loog Oldham became the group’s manager. Jones left the band less than a month before his death in 1969, having already been replaced by Mick Taylor, who remained until 1974. After Taylor left the band, Ronnie Wood joined in 1975 and has been on guitar ever since. Following Wyman’s departure in 1993, Darryl Jones joined as their touring bassist. Other touring keyboardists for the band have been Nicky Hopkins (1967–1982), Billy Preston (1971–1981), Ian McLagan (1978–1981), and Chuck Leavell (1982–present).

The Rolling Stones were at the forefront of the British Invasion of bands that became popular in the United States in 1964. They have released 30 studio albums, 18 live albums and numerous compilations. Sticky Fingers (1971) and Some Girls (1978) are generally considered their best albums; each album reached No. 1 in the United States where they spent a combined total of six weeks at the top spot on Billboard magazine’s album charts;[10] Tattoo You (1981) became their most recent album to date to peak at No. 1.[11] In 1989 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,[12] and in 2004 they ranked number 4 in Rolling Stone magazine’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.[13] In 2008 they performed Super Bowl XLV’s halftime show.[14]

Led Zeppelin

Formed in London in 1968, Led Zeppelin consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bass player and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. The band’s heavy, guitar-driven sound has led them to be cited as one of the progenitors of heavy metal. They were also ranked No. 1 in Classic Rock’s “50 Greatest Artists of All Time” issue.Their self-titled debut album was released in early 1969 and is universally regarded as one of the greatest debuts in the history of rock music.

The band’s current lineup also includes Destroyer drummer Sam Goldberg and multi-instrumentalist Marika Anthony-Shaw.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend is an American rock band from New York City, formed in 2006. The band consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Ezra Koenig, bassist and keyboardist Chris Baio, drummer and percussionist Darren King, and keyboardist and backing vocalist Rostam Batmanglij. The band’s first two albums drew from Afro-pop, worldbeat, and classic pop sources; its third album was influenced by 1960s garage rock and African music.

Vampire Weekend’s self-titled debut album was released on January 29, 2008 to critical acclaim. The album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in October 2009. It spawning the singles “A-Punk”, “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa”, and “Oxford Comma”, all of which were included on Pitchfork Media’s list of the 500 best songs of the 2000s.

The band’s second album, Contra, was released on January 11, 2010 in the United Kingdom and January 12 in the United States to positive reviews. The album peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart an was certified gold by the RIAA in April 2010. Its singles include “Cousins”, “Giving Up the Gun” (both of which peaked at number 15 on the UK Singles Chart), “White Sky”, and “Holiday”.

The National

The National is an American rock band from Brooklyn, New York, consisting of Matt Berninger (vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Formed in 1999, the band’s core members are Aaron and Bryce Dessner, Scott and Bryan Devendorf, and Matt Berninger.

The National has released eight studio albums, four of which were on Beggars Banquet Records and four on 4AD. Their most recent album, I Am Easy to Find, was released in 2019 on 4AD and featuring collaborations with Sharon Van Etten, Mina Tindle, Kate Stables of This Is the Kit and David Hendrick of Menomena.
