Introduction

“My Country, ‘Tis of Thee”, also known as “America”, is an American patriotic song, whose lyrics were written by Samuel Francis Smith. The melody used is the same as that of the anthem “God Save the Queen”. The song served as one of the de facto national anthems of the United States before the adoption of “The Star-Spangled Banner” as the official anthem in 1931.

Verse 1

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountainside
Let freedom ring!

Verse 2

My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the Pilgrims’ pride,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring.

Verse 3

And I’m proud to be an American,

Where at least I know I’m free.
And I won’t forget the men who died,
Who gave that right to me.
And I gladly stand up next to you,
And defend her still today.
‘Cause there’s a land that I love,
And she’s my home, sweet home.

Verse 4

And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Verse 5

And there’s no place I’m prouder to be
Than here with my family
My country, ’tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty
Of thee I sing

Coda

The coda (pronounced “CO-da”) is a short, final section of a piece of music. In Classical pieces and operas, the coda usually appears at the end of the last movement or act, and serves to bring the work to a satisfactory close. In popular songs, the coda often appears after the final chorus, and consists of a few extra measures that repeat or echo the main themes of the song.
